Rijkswaterstaat is part of the Dutch Ministry of Infrastructure and the Environment and responsible for the design, construction, management and maintenance of the main infrastructure facilities in the Netherlands. It employs about 9,000 personnel. As such Rijkswaterstaat is responsible for the design,

construction, management and maintenance of the main infrastructure networks, and facilities in the Netherlands. These networks include: the main road network, the main waterway network, the main water systems, the environment and the pipe network.

The networks under responsibility of Rijkswaterstaat (RWS) comprise of 3,000 km of motorways, 7,000 km of waterways, sea access channels and corridors, 90,000 km2 of surface waters, 250 km of dams, dykes and coastal defences. The networks combined include 1,100 bridges, 25 tunnels, 29 Eco ducts, 110 locks weirs and storm surge barriers.
